A crucial part of your persuasive essay is your thesis statement. The thesis tells your reader what your position is, and all ideas, examples, and commentary in your essay should relate back to your thesis. You have been taught a formula to answer persuasive prompts:

THESIS = Words from prompt – “State your opinion on whether” + because + reason 1 + (optional) reason 2

While using this formula is not required, it is certainly helpful to ensure you clearly and successfully answer a prompt. Only once you have mastered this thesis formula should you move on to more sophisticated structures. Practice answering the persuasive prompts below using the formula.

Example: State your opinion on whether Spongebob or Patrick is more annoying to Squidward.

Answer: Spongebob is more annoying to Squidward than Patrick because Spongebob is incessantly loud, and he gets joy out of tormenting Squidward.
